Our restoration and stewardship programs are dedicated to restoring and caring for healthy forest, natural areas and watersheds that are important to our regions sustainability and quality of life. These important natural systems provide storm water retention, reduce erosion, improve air quality, buffer noise, and capture carbon dioxide and pollutants from the air. Perhaps most importantly, they help establish a profound connection between people and place, and foster an appreciation for nature both within and beyond our cities. 

Summary of Position

Forterra is recruiting for two Washington Service Corps Individual Placement (IP) AmeriCorps members to join our team. The AmeriCorps member’s essential function is to support three Forterra Restoration and Stewardship programs.

  1. Green City Partnerships: A collaboration of nine cities dedicated to creating a livable city with healthy urban forest. The Green Cities are working in partnership with Forterra, local restoration crews, organizations and volunteers to restore 9000 acres for urban forested parks and natural areas.
  2. Riparian Restoration Program: A successful watershed approach to restore and enhance salmon habitat and water quality along our local rivers. This innovative program provides technical assistance and on the ground restoration support to restore private and public properties along priority rivers systems.
  3. Forterra Lands: Forterra oversees the management of over 14,000 acres of diverse landscapes that we own or hold easements on. Forterra stewards the lands we own monitors our conservation easements annually. This position is contingent on funding.

Member Duties

  • Volunteer Event Support: Provide logistical and leadership support for volunteer work parties including tool management, ordering materials, leading groups of volunteers in restoration projects, clean up and restocking of materials, entering event data into a database and following up with volunteers.
  • Community Engagement and Volunteer Recruitment: Assist with volunteer recruitment, outreach events and educational opportunities, such as games, trainings, and interpretive walks.  This includes contributing to web and social media postings and promotion of stewardship volunteer opportunities; developing and implementing creative outreach and incentive ideas to help engage and retain stewardship volunteers; creating promotional materials and activities for outreach tables and events; and staffing outreach tables and attend events on behalf of Forterra stewardship programs.
  • Monitoring and Restoration of Forterra and Partner Lands: Assist with monitoring and restoration of various project including preparing field visit materials, accompanying the staff on site visits, and follow up reporting, documentation and communication to landowners. Help with restoration planning and logistics for specific projects by ordering materials, tracking restoration and monitoring success of restoration efforts.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience in environmental restoration, outreach, marketing, volunteer management, community engagement, or related field.
  • Academic background in science, organizing, communications, or related field is helpful but not required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead events and groups, including strong public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Well organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to work some non-standard hours for volunteer events, including evenings and weekends (there are a lot of Saturday events).
  • Valid, insurable driver’s license/record.
  • English required, additional languages a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word)

Travel, Working Conditions, and Physical Environment

  • This position is subject to activities beyond typical indoor environmental conditions of a professional office setting. The essential physical requirements of this position include:
  • Ability to exert up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or an equivalent amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Ability to sit or otherwise remain in a stationary position at a computer workstation for the majority of the work day.
  • Ability to frequently move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Ability to constantly operate a computer and other office equipment such as calculators, copy machines, and printers.
  • Ability to safely and correctly use hand tools associated with restoration, and ability to instruct and supervise others in the use of same tools.
  • Ability to communicate accurately with team members, volunteer leadership, clients, and vendors about matters related to the daily operations of the organization.
  • Travel and field time, approximately 50% of work hours which could include travel within a 12-county region. This position includes travel that requires the ability to drive a personal or company-provided car.
